Hi, I’m Jairo Rene Leiva.
I’m a portrait photographer based in Petaluma, California, but more than anything, I’m someone who pays attention.
I notice the small details. The quiet expressions. The spontaneous laugh. The moments in between that are easy to miss.
Those are often the moments I remember—and the ones I most want to photograph.
HOW IT STARTED
Before the Camera, There Was a Pencil
Long before I picked up a camera, I was drawing people with pencil and charcoal. I was fascinated by faces—the expressions, lines, and little details that make one person different from another.
Photography eventually became another way for me to explore that curiosity. I started with 35mm film, when every frame felt deliberate and you couldn’t immediately look at the back of a camera to see whether you got the shot.
My first paid portrait session happened almost by accident. A coworker asked if I would photograph his girlfriend, who wanted photographs for modeling. They paid for the film and processing, and I discovered how much I enjoyed creating photographs with another person rather than simply photographing what was around me.
Cameras and technology have changed enormously since then. What hasn’t changed is what interests me: people, personality, expression, and the moments that reveal something real.
MY APPROACH
The Person Matters More Than the Pose
I don’t approach a portrait session with a long list of poses I need someone to perform.
I’ll guide you when you need direction, but I also watch. I pay attention to how you naturally move, how you hold yourself, what makes you laugh, and what happens when you stop thinking about the camera.
Sometimes the photograph I love most happens between the photographs we were planning to make.
That balance—between direction and observation—is where I find the images that feel most natural to me.
THE EXPERIENCE
You Don’t Have to Be Photogenic
One of the things I hear often is, “I’m not photogenic.”
I don’t believe you need to know how to pose, perform for the camera, or arrive knowing exactly what to do. My job is to create an environment where you can relax enough to let your personality come through.
We’ll talk. We’ll experiment. I’ll give you direction when it helps, and sometimes I’ll simply let a moment unfold.
Whether we’re creating a personal portrait, lifestyle images, something for your professional presence, or a more intimate and expressive session, the experience should feel collaborative—not like you’re being placed into someone else’s idea of who you should be.

Comfortable in Your Own Skin
Some sessions become more personal. They may explore beauty, confidence, sensuality, or simply the experience of seeing yourself differently.
I approach that work the same way I approach every portrait—with respect, communication, and trust.
Whether the photographs are natural and understated, glamorous, boudoir-inspired, or more artistic, I want the person in front of my camera to feel comfortable with what we’re creating together.
Confidence doesn’t have one age, one body type, or one definition of beauty.
BASED IN PETALUMA
Portrait Photography Across the North Bay
I’m based in Petaluma and photograph people throughout Sonoma County, Marin, Napa, and the greater San Francisco Bay Area.
Sessions can happen in the places that make sense for the story we want to create—at home, outdoors, along the coast, around town, in a working environment, or wherever you feel most like yourself.
The location matters, but the person always matters more.
